Lesson 06 : Wood paneling

Types of wood paneling

Raised Paneling

  • Raised panels are made of frame and panel construction, which is a method, developed hundreds of years ago.
  • In a frame and panel construction, a large panel is fitted into a groove in the intebrior edge of a more dimensionally stable frame made of narrow strips of wood.
  • The panel is sized slightly smaller than actual dimension so that the grooved frame accommodates, and simply rests in the groove without being physically attached to the frame.
  • Since the panel is given a little "room to move" and is not physically attached to the frame, it is free to expand and contract with seasonal changes in humidity without affecting the stable shape and size of the frame.

Flat Paneling

  • Flat panels are also used in panel constructionl
  • Flat panels offer simpler lines than raised panels and offer an unfussy and economical alternative.
  • If the paneling is to be painted, MDF is used for the inset panels.

Flat Panel with Beadingk

  • This is done by adding running molding along the insides of rails and styles.
