Lesson 13 : Acoustics

Techniques of applying acoustic treatment

There are many different techniques that can be applied to sound proofing. They are as follows:

  1. Noise Barriers
  2. Acoustic Insulators
  3. Vibration Dampers
  4. Anti Noise Sound Generators
  1. Noise Barriers –They act as ‘deflectors’ by bending the sound waves away from the receiver. The barriers are used to refract or diffract the sound away from where it naturally occurs. . These barriers are constructed from high density materials like cement or SDS (sound deadening steel) which also absorbs some of the sound.
  2. Acoustic Insulators –These insulators are found in interiors and they confine noise with the insulated area. These are applied in Home Theatre systems to ‘trap’ the sounds within the theatre space with the intention of enhancing the visual / audio experience.
  3. Vibration Damping – It is the form of treating unwanted mechanical noise. Damping basically occurs when the vibrations are absorbed by an attached mechanism or material which converts the mechanical energy to heat, and dissipates it accordingly. A series of coil springs or a rubber pad are excellent examples of vibration dampers.
  4. Anti Noise Sound Generators - Anti noise devices does noise cancellations by emitting a slight static buzz which actively neutralizes any sound waves operating at the same amplitude.
