Lesson 05 : Basic Principles of Art in Flower Arrangement
Harmony
Harmony refers to a blending of all components of the design. If a design is harmonious, there should be a pleasing relationship within the design in color, texture, shape, size, and line so that a clear, central idea of theme exists. Disregard of a design principle will lead to a lack of harmony.
Unity: Unity is achieved when all the parts of the design suggest a oneness in idea or impression. Unity is achieved, in part, by repeating the colors throughout the design. The establishment of a focal point and a dominant flower in the arrangement will also help to create unity. Do not layer flowers, colors, or textures in horizontal rows within a design. Layering destroys unity. Good transition in an arrangement helps to achieve unity by leading the eye smoothly from one part of the arrangement to another.
The principles of design are like a recipe with the elements of design as the ingredients. These elements are the visual qualities of a composition-line, form, texture, and color.
