Lesson 4 : Sewing Adjustment for Defects

Upper Thread Breaking

1. Needle inserted backwards.
2. Machine improperly threaded.
3. Tension too tight.
4. Needle bent or having blunt point.
5. Thread too coarse for needle size.
6. Burr on needle hole of presser foot (Caused by breaking needle when pulling fabric from machine)
7. Needle too long for machine, or not inserted all the way in the needle bar.
8. Needle too fine for size of thread and fabric to be sewn.
9. Threads not properly pulled back under presser foot when starting to sew.
10. Lint or dirt around bobbin case holder.
11. Irregular sewing speed.

Remedies:

• Check the threading order and thread correctly
• Adjust the tension disc
• Replace blunt or bent needles
• Use appropriate thread for the needle size
• Clean the bobbin case and shuttle
• Sew at moderate speed
