The buttonhole stitch is the most appropriate stitch for sewing buttonholes. It is used to prevent fraying of the buttonhole and also used as a decorative stitch for finishing scalloped edges, for finishing the raw edges of table linen etc. This stitch differs from loop stitch which has knots on top of the stitch. As it is made closer than loop stitches, the row of knots provides greater strength to raw edges. Since it has a small half-knot at the top of each stitch it is also less likely to unravel if the thread is broken, which is likely to happen eventually from use.
