Lesson 01: Introduction To Furniture And Furnishing

Introduction

Furniture (probably from the French ‘fournir’- to provide) is gthe mass noun for the movable objects (‘mobile’ in Latin languages) intended to support various human activities such as seating and sleeping in beds, to hold objects at a convenient height for work using horizontal surfaces above the ground, or to store things.

Furniture can be a product of design and is considered a form of decorative art. In addition to furniture’s functional role, it can serve a symbolic or religious purpose. Domestic furniture works to create, in conjunction with furnishings such as clocks and lighting, comfortable and convenient interior spaces. Furniture can be made from many materials, including metal, plastic, and wood

If architecture is the structure or bare bones of space of a house, then furniture is the muscle. It fleshes out the room and makes the empty space habitable and functional. Thus, furniture lends a certain character to a room which determines whether we call it “modern” or “traditional” or habitable.

Furniture is the nucleus around which the entire decorating scheme resolves. It is generally seen that features such as accessories, soft furnishings, wall hanging, foot mats and floor coverings are planned and selected only after the furniture items are finalized for a room. A scantily furnished room will appear empty and barren. When a person enters a room, it is the furniture arrangement that makes an impression and extends a warm and friendly greeting. It can be said that it is the furniture which gives character to a room and other features add to its ornamental value.

The foremost relevance of furniture is its function or utility. Furniture in a room reflects a great deal about the occupants. What we choose to live with will reflect our educational, ethnic, social and economic background, besides indicating our age and cultural development. The furniture we select, its quality and style, the harmony or discord and its overall effect transmits this subtle information. It gives clues to where we stand at a given moment of our lives. It speaks silently about how we think, what we value and who we are
