Lesson 03: Material Used For Furniture Construction

Materials Used In Furniture

In recent years there have been tremendous changes in tastes, in standards and style of living and in attitude. These are reflected in the way homes are furnished and arranged. Designers today use a large variety of materials, both traditional and modern. Each material is capable of many uses and can be made to fit into the mood and style of a home. There is a general trend towards using these materials in a way which highlights their natural properties of colour and texture. Most furniture is clear-cut in its lines and is based on simple geometrical forms, without in any way losing its grace. As living space becomes more and more restricted there is also cause for designing of multipurpose units like shelves which can be fixed in a number of ways or convertible sofa-beds. Furniture is finished in ways which require a minimum of attention, thereby saving homemakers both time and effort.
