Types Of Curtains

Some of the basic forms of window decoration include:
Glass Curtains -
Made of sheer fabric in simple straight lines. May be used alone or with draperies. Usually cover the whole window area.


Tie-back Curtains - Panels are draped aside and held to frame or wall with extra pieces of fabric or special fixtures. Tie-back curtains are often made of sheer fabric and decorated with ruffles.

Criss-cross Curtains -
Wide panels mounted so that they overlap and then tie back. Usually made of sheer fabric and trimmed with ruffles.

Draw Curtains (or draw draperies) -
Mounted on traverse rod so they can be drawn open or closed. Different types of traverse rods so they can be drawn open or closed. Different types of traverse rods permit wide variety of treatments. Some draw curtain panels to meet at center of window (two-way draw); others draw one panel across entire window area (one-way draw). Curved traverse rods are also available.

Sash Curtains -
Similar to glass curtains, but mounted on rod attached to sash or frame. May cover only part of window. Some times held taut with rods at top and bottom.

Café Curtains -
Short curtains that cover portion of window. Often hung on decorative rods by means of rings, clips, loops, or hooks. Usually rather informal but with use of over-draperies may be adapted to more formal treatments.

Tier Curtains -
Two or more horizontal rows of short curtains mounted so that they overlap.
Valance -

Decorative finish at top of window. May be gathered or pleated flounce of fabric.
Swag -

Draped section of fabric at top of window. Usually used with short pieces at sides to form cascades. Suitable for more formal window treatments.

Cornice -
Stiff boxlike treatment at top of window. May be wood, metal, or any other decorative material. Fabric-covered cornices are sometimes decorated with fringe or braid.
