Application Of Ergonomic Principles

  • All the structural features in the house should be according to its intended purpose / function and users anthropometry.
  • There should not be any visual discomfort in any part of the house. Every work surface should be well lighted, ventilated without any glare and shadow
  • Every item accessed frequently should be within reachable distance to avoid over-stretching.
  • Adjust work surface height so that it is at or below elbow height for most job tasks.
  • Adjust chair or work stool height according to leg length and the height of the work surface.
  • Allow space so that legs can be outstretched.
  • Handgrips and tools used in work should fit into hand size.
  • Workstation should be arranged to avoid over-stretching and unnecessary twisting.
  • When sitting, sit upright with ankles, knees, hips, and elbows positioned at ninety degrees with shoulders relaxed.
  • Select an adjustable chair with a stable base, adequate padding, good low-back support, proper back and hip support, and the seat doesn’t hit the back of the knees.
  • When doing housework try to keep pathways clear to avoid unnecessary twisting or stooping while mopping or sweeping.
  • Whether at home or at work you can avoid serious, costly injuries and improve stamina with use of these simple ergonomic principles.
