Lesson 15 : Designing Personal Space

Bath Room

Main bath-room should be on the ground floor near the kitchen.

  • If hot water boiler is to be kept in the bath room a minimum size required for it is 6'x10'.
  • If used only for bath purposes 5’x8’ is a sufficient and convenient size.
  • If a bath-tub or jaccuzzi (refer to any bath with water jets) or any of the multisystem.
  • There should be two windows in a bathroom - one for ventilation situated at a height of 6 above the outside ground level, and another at usual low level with frosted glass shutters for admitting light & maintaining privacy.
  • An exhaust fan may also be provided at the ventilator.
  • It is convenient in small cottages to keep the height of the bathroom low (about 7 or 8 ft) and to provide a loft above it for storing any other articles of lumber. The loft should be well lighted and ventilated and it should have a hinged door of expanded metal to keep rats out.

  • Indian bath requires some part of the floor 3'x3' in the comer to be in the lower level by about 3 inches than the remaining and a smoothly dressed stone 15"x15".
  • Entire floor of the bathroom should have a flooring of polished flag stones slab or unglazed tiles, walls around should be lined with glazed tiles to a height of at least 3' or if its cost be found to be prohibitive, the floor should be paved with flagstone and the sides with cement plaster coated with a durable and hard surfaced paint.
  • A drain trap should be fixed in the bottom of the sink towards which the floor should slope. In no case should water be allowed to stagnate near the house. It causes not only damp, but also breeds mosquito larvae. When a level difference is provided for the bathing area; ideally a separate drain trap would be needed for it.
  • Provision of a corner shelf at a suitable place for keeping a soap-box, a towel rack. Another shelf at 9" above the floor level with perforation for drawing of water from wet and soiled lines, a shower tap, if feasible & necessary.
  • Main bathroom should be located in a place opposite to the prevailing wind & should have no ventilations over the doors. Attached bathroom to every room is a luxury.
  • In addition to main bathroom, a common bathroom which guests & other occasional visitors can use is an important requirement in the house.
  • A room with only a toilet and a sink is sometimes called a half-bathroom, a half bath, or a powder room.
  • In the interest of economy, the bath & toilet rooms on the upper floor should be located directly over of those on the ground floor.
  • A bathroom serving several bed rooms should not have doors opening into different rooms, but there should be one door only opening from a common lobby.
  • The door shutter of the bathroom should be so arranged that when open, it should screen the place where actual bath is taken.
