Driveways And Walkways

  • Driveways and main walks to the front and other doors are necessary utilities. As such they may not be things of beauty.
  • A good general rule is to place walks where people would naturally tend to walk whether there was a path there or not. In other words, walks and drives should be placed so as to follow the lines of least resistance.
  • Creating paths and walkways are easy when constructed from natural materials. Stone paths and mulch walkways are no maintenance. Rock walkways, bordered with natural plants are very low maintenance. Each of these paths and walkways can be constructed in a short time, with limited resources, and by a single individual, while adding functionality and enjoyment to the property.
  • A single car driveway width should be 10' wide, anything less than 10 feet will be too narrow to drive or park on comfortably. 12' is often used for added comfort and assuring to get out of your vehicle without stepping on the lawn or landscape
  • The width of walkway should be 4’ wide but this may vary with the choice of material for walkway.
  • A relatively level area is the easiest area to work with, but a slight slope away from the house, direct rain water away (1/4" should be enough).
