Mechanical Ventilation

Lesson 10 : Wall Element – Ventilators

Mechanical Ventilation

Mechanical or forced ventilation is the process of supplying and removing air by means of mechanical devices, such as fans. It may be arranged to provide supply, extract or balanced ventilation for an occupied space. There are also specialized areas in which ventilation is vital, such as ventilation for industrial processes, mines, and tunnels and underground development.

There are health benefits for all residents from regularly cleaning the Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning (HVAC) System and its air ducts. Heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems collect mold, fungi, bacteria and a variety of contaminants that reduce the quality of the air residents and visitors breathe. A dirty air duct contributes to poor indoor air quality and affects the health of people in the residences and commercial buildings

Recirculating air conditioning system simply can’t remove some of the underlying causes for allergens, mold, fungi and pollen particles found in a home. Changing the air conditioner filters isn't enough. Bacteria, mold, and dust linger in the air ducts and then are blown back into the home, contaminating the air we breathe By replacing the air in home and commercial buildings with fresh, filtered, oxygen-enriched air, we will reduce the conditions which foster these health hazards. The inmates breathe easier and feel better every day.

Importance of operation and maintenance of HVAC systems

Improper operation and maintenance of HVAC systems is one of the most common problems that impact workplace indoor environmental quality (IEQ). HVAC systems include all of the equipment used to ventilate, heat, and cool the building; to move the air around the building (ductwork); and to filter and clean the air. These systems can have a significant impact on how pollutants are distributed and removed. Maintaining good IEQ requires constant attention to the building's HVAC system, which includes the design, layout and pollutant source management or air filtration.
