Forms Of Staircase

The Form of staircase depends on the functionality of stairs, availability of space and safety of users. Spiral staircases, curved spiral stairs, circular staircase, are designed in buildings for different grandeur. The structural design in millwork of stairs and stair parts, commercial or residential design needs, space availability, materials, finishes, ornamentation and creative ideas bring widen range in choice. Ready solutions for designs of wood stairs and wrought iron metal balustrades, railings, spindles are easy alternatives for quick solutions. A number of options for stairs such as straight flight stairs, L shaped stairs, curved stairs, spiral stairs etc. are available, each having advantages and disadvantages.

  1. Straight Stairs

  2. Dog-leg or Half turn: it consist of one flight of stair rising to an intermediate half space landing with the second flight travelling in the opposite direction.

  3. Quarter turn: this consist of a flight with a landing and a right angle turn to left or right.

  4. Spiral Stairs

  5. Circular Stairs: Helical or circular stairs do not have a central pole and there is a handrail on both sides. These have the advantage of a more uniform tread width when compared to the spiral staircase. Such stairs may also be built around an elliptical or oval planform. A double helix is possible, with two independent helical stairs in the same vertical space, allowing one person to ascend and another to descend, without ever meeting if they choose different helixes
