Harmony

Definition and concept

Harmony refers to the agreement or combination of elements to form complete whole. It is a fundamental requirement in any piece of the work in which appearance and use have to be considered. It is a synthesizing principle of design that produces an impression of unity through selection and arrangement of consistent objects and ideas. It can be produced by regulating amount of likeness and variety or contrast among elements in a design. To create better harmony, there should be somewhat common in components that are put together and the components used for variety should be smaller and in contrast.

If the principles of proportion, balance, emphasis and rhythm are applied creatively so that there is a sense of beauty in the design, the resulting attribute will be that of harmony or unity. It is a culminating goal toward which we are striving when we select and arrange the various elements for a particular design. If we have failed to apply any one of the principles of design, then the resulting design will also lack harmony. Harmony lies between the two extremes of monotony and contrast. It combines the character of both. A principle of unity with variety leads to a design that is harmonic in character.
