This is a five-piece pattern set. These five pieces are; front and back bodice, a full sleeve and front and back skirt. The dimensions of basic pattern are specific to a form or figure. It is developed without any design features. (Figure 3)
The basic pattern made by designer is cut, slashed and manipulated in many ways to create new designs. The main and one important advantage of this technique is that the newly developed designer pattern retains the size of original basic pattern.
The function of a basic, block or foundation pattern is to provide a simple outline of bodice, skirt or sleeve, from which every kind of style pattern can be developed. Block represents information in flat form and since our figure is three dimensional, the block should have additional information such as dart, ease etc. which suggest the three dimensional information about figure. If the block pattern is well planned and carefully developed it can help to a skilled designer to understand the type of figure before construction of designs for an individual. Block pattern helps in good designing and contribute to the speed and accuracy of pattern designing.
While making foundation or block pattern many basic and necessary calculations are done, hence it reduces the excessive work at that time when exercise of artistic judgment, good taste and fashion sense is of particular importance.
According to the type of trade and the methods and ideas of the cutter, blocks are made in a variety of materials: in thin calico, in leno (often backed with something) and in different kinds of paper or cardboard, including the very heavy type used in factories.
