Lesson 26 : Personnel Management - Training

Training

Training is, perhaps, the best understood of all personnel functions, and it is also one where the results can be seen, measured, and evaluated in terms of production, quality, promotion, and personal satisfaction.

Initial Training :
The most elementary type of training is that in newcomers, often referred to as induction. School-leavers today are seldom expected to take the big step from learning to earning without sympathetic assistance. Induction courses vary in length and content, but the intention in all is to introduce the new worker to factory life and to give him or her essential information and often the gist of regulations regarding safety and welfare services.

Initial training is not, of course, confined to young people, and too many firms are still satisfied with the old-fashioned method of learning from the old workers where the new employee is expected to pick up the job from watching a skilled operative. This process is lengthy and slow and usually highly frustrating for the learner, who feels he will never attain the speed or dexterity of the expert. It is also wasteful, because not only the bad habits of the skilled worker is picked up along with the good but there is no means of knowing until much later whether the newcomer possesses the aptitude required.
