APPLIQUE A method of applying a decorative pattern to the surface of fabric by using cut out pieces of materials and attaching through hand or machine stitches.
APRON A smaller version of apparel used by a woman or man to protect the front of a garment. Also used as a decorative front addition in women's or girl's dresses.
ARAN ISLES The name for a sweater of Irish origin with characteristic cable stitches (braided look). Originated in the Aran Islands, off the southern coast of Ireland.
ARGYLE Diamond shapes in colorful patterns on a solid background. Primarily used in sweaters and socks. Original pattern of the Campbell of Argyle clan.
ASCOT Soft fabric worn around the neck. Forerunner of the tie. Used in today's fashion as a colorful neck accessory. Fabric is knotted with broad ends laid flat on one another. Originally popularized at Ascot, Heath, the famous horse event in Berkshire, England.
ASYMMETRICAL Used in fashion to denote a design line or closure that is off-center. Can be a diagonal or vertical line.
AVANT-GARDE A fashion forward or individualistic "look."
BAGGIES Fashion pants with added hip/leg fullness.
BALLERINA A long,below calf length full skirt. Popular in 1940's and 1950's.
BALL FRINGE A braid with tiny , balls attached, used to decorate the surface of a garment.
BALLGOWN A long, fashion gown, used for formal occasions.
BAND Rectangular fabric used as a collar or cuff. see Collar.
BANDANNA A scarf, usually red/ white or blue/white checked, used with a Western "look."
BANDEAU 1. A folded horizontal band used as a decorative top of a strapless dress or swimsuit 2. fabric bra top of a 2-piece swimsuit.
BANGLE Round, formed bracelet. Usually worn in groups of two or more.
BARETTE/BARRETTE Small decorative clip to hold hair in place.
BEACH PAJAMAS First worn in the 1920's. A woman's one-piece full length culotte jumpsuit. Popular again in the 1970's.
BEADING Use of varieties of beads, sewn onto clothing or accessories for a decorative look. The 1980's reflected much beading on bridal dresses and eveningwear.
BEADS Small shapes of various materials such as glass, pearl, shell, seed, stone, or plastic, with a center hole and strung on narrow cord or leather and worn as a necklace or bracelet.
