Lesson 20: Weft Knitting

Characteristics

  • Weft knitted fabric has all the loops drawn to the face of the fabric. The face side has prominent wales and the back with courses.
  • It has a definite right and wrong side but can be used on either side for garment construction unless printed
  • They are light in weight and have good stretch in the course direction
  • Fabrics have a tendency to curl at the edges. The sides will curl to the technical back and top & bottom to the face
  • If a loop or yarn breaks, a ‘run’ is seen in the length- wise, or wale direction leading to ladders
  • They do not ravel or wrinkle easily and have good recovery from wrinkling
  • A wide variety of fabrics patterns are available - stripes, multicolored patterns, textured surfaces and pile effects etc.

Variation:
Miss or float
stitch

It is a variation of the plain knit and is used for creating special effects. It is characterized by yarns floating on the technical back of the fabric. In a miss loop the needle does not move into position to accept the yarn, but a yarn is presented, and no actual stitch or loop is formed.
