Lesson 23: Use and Care of Knitted Fabrics

Household

Woven fabrics continue to dominate household fabric markets, but knit fabrics are available for most household uses. Knit sheets are more popular for use on crib mattresses and waterbeds than in other applications. Knit upholstery fabric provides some decorative effects at comparable prices which are not possible with woven fabrics.

Mattress covers and mattress pads are also being constructed from tricot knits. The stretch quality of the fabrics provides a softer surface than woven fabrics in such products. They are also used in window treatment, although fabrics that are too heavy distort and elongate when used in long pieces. To provide stability tricot fabrics are laminated to other fabrics.
