Lesson 18 : Growth of Private label: Retailers into Manufacturers

Introduction

A brand is a name, trademark, or logo that is used to identify the products of a specific maker or seller and to differentiate the products from those of the competition. Some brands or names, especially those that are sold at very high prices, become associated with status symbols.

A national brand is one that identifies the producer of that product and is generally found in many stores across the country. In order to minimize competition from other local stores that feature the same brands, some stores may seek items from branded lines that will be confined, or exclusive with them in their own communities. National brands can give stores and customers alike a consistent standard of quality and are the backbone of the assortments in many stores.

Today the names of fashion designers have become so well known to the public, because they are featured on labels, in advertising, and in the media, that they can be considered national brands. For many customers, their "names" have a value quite distinct from the intrinsic value of the products themselves.
