Lesson 18 : Growth of Private label: Retailers into Manufacturers

Retail Store Brand

A name of a retail chain that is, in most cases, used as the exclusive label on the items in the store.
Exclusivity
Exclusiveness of merchandise is a feature that all stores would like to have but is very hard to obtain. Some retailers consider exclusives so important that their merchandising staff is expected to work with manufacturers toward this end. A store may attain exclusive merchandise in several ways:

  • By prevailing upon vendors to confine one or more styles to their store for a given period of time and/or within their trading areas.
  • By becoming the sale agent within their trading area for new, young designers.
  • By buying domestically or abroad from sources of supply not yet tapped by competitors.
  • By buying from producers who will manufacture goods to the buyer's special design and other specifications. Specification buying, however, imposes the necessity of placing large enough initial orders to ensure profitability for the producer.

Miscellaneous labels that are not included in the categories above: these included licensed brands.
