Introduction The Bombay Textile Research Association (BTRA) was set up in the year 1954 as an autonomous Co-operative Research Association. BTRA was the third in the series of Co-operative Textile Research Institutes set up in the aftermath of Indian Independence with a view to carry out research and other scientific work for textile and allied industries. BTRA was registered as a ‘Society’ under Societies Registration Act, XXI 1860. It is located at Ghatkopar, Mumbai in sylvan surrounding with easy accessibility. The Institute has completed over 50 years of glorious service to the textile and allied industry. The aim of the organization is to provide day-to-day technological inputs to the industry and meet the Science & Technological objectives set at the national level. The Institute also provides solutions to various technical and techno-economical problems faced by the industry in a cost effective and stipulated time frame. Based on earlier experience, expertise and facilities, BTRA is recognized and funded as a CENTRE OF EXCELLENCE FOR GEOTECH by the Ministry of Textiles, Government of India. This Centre will help boost the growth of Geo-tech sector in India.... Integrated Skill Development Scheme for the Textile and Apparel Sector
This scheme is sponsored by the Ministry of Textiles, GoI. Under this scheme, BTRA is gearing up to provide training in the areas of (i) Apparel (ii) Chemical Processing (iii) Technical Textiles (iv) Entrepreneurship Development Programme and (v) Weavers/Jobbers [by PSCs] to the Indian Textile Industry.
Genesis: Bombay Textile Research Association (BTRA) was registered by members of the Millowners' Association, Bombay, under the Societies Registration Act, XXI of 1860 on 21st April 1954, with nine mill companies contributing to the Memorandum and Articles of Association.
BTRA has grown leaps and bounds over the years since its inception in 1954 to meet the technological needs of the Indian textile industry as well as to achieve S&T objectives set at the national level. BTRA members include not only textile units (from mill sector as well as decentralized sector) but also manufacturers from man-made fibre, machinery, dyes and chemical auxiliaries industries. The BTRA zone largely comprised composite mills and from the beginning, the R & D and services were fine-tuned to satisfy their comprehensive requirements.
Industrial research is viewed today as a commercial operation to be justified solely by the usefulness of the results to the textile industry. Therefore, the limited resources of BTRA have been, from the very beginning, efficiently deployed in such areas where maximum benefits accrue to the textile industry. R & D activities at BTRA cover applied and basic research, process and product development, new and frontier areas of technology, engineering and microprocessor-based instrumentation, operational studies to improve and standardize mill working, testing and consultancy services, maintenance audit, energy conservation and additional energy sources, communication and training, post graduate research and appropriate technology for the Decentralized Sector. Assistance to the Government and Public Sector Institutions on matters related to technological aspects of the industry is also an integral part of its activities.
Excellent Infrastructure
- Full fledged pilot plants for applied research particularly non-woven, chemical processing and polymer application.
- BTRA Testing Laboratories are accredited by the National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories (NABL) as per ISO/IEC 17025 -2005 standards. BTRA regularly participates in inter-laboratory testing programs conducted by ASTM, AATCC, etc. Modern testing facilities for testing textile and allied materials, chemicals, auxiliaries, etc.
- Sophisticated testing instruments to test mechanical and chemical properties of textiles.
- Separate testing laboratories for testing technical textiles, microbiology testing and Eco-testing.
- Electronic instrumentation laboratory.
- Library with wide-ranging books/journals on textiles [over 20,000 holdings - current as well as old] providing referral, bibliographic and Xeroxing services.
- Sponsored projects by ministry of textiles, government of India
Centre of Excellence for Geo-tech
Mission: In the past two decades, many applications of geo synthetics have proved their value in civil engineering projects. This new class of material has added entirely a new dimension to the world of geotechnical engineering. Geo synthetic materials like Geo textiles, Geo grids, Geo nets, Geo cell, and Geo membranes are used in various civil engineering activities. The aims of setting up of Centre of Excellence for Geo ech at BTRA are as follows.
- To create awareness for the use of geo synthetic products and to facilitate the evaluation and development of geo synthetics
- To encourage the entrepreneurs to develop geo synthetics indigenously by providing know how and developing samples at BTRA pilot plant.
- The Centre of Excellence for Geo tech at BTRA will certainly help the growth of the geo tech sector in India in the years to come.
The Bombay Textile Research Association [BTRA] conducts training and development activities regularly in textile manufacturing processes and testing of textiles. It offers need based training programmes / refresh courses / basic courses to executives [from marketing/commercial/personnel], students, shop-floor technicians/operators and seasoned technocrats. Also, BTRA offers structured training programmes to suit the special needs of the personnel from the textile industry.
BTRA presents two types of training programmes separately for staff and operators. The training programmes can be conducted either at BTRA or at the premises of the company. The duration and type/contents of training programmes can also be altered on the basis of mutual consultation.
BTRA faculty is highly experienced in shop-floor trouble shooting problems regarding quality and production and is well acquainted with modern on-line and off-line testing of various textile products. Another major plus point at BTRA is that it has sophisticated testing instruments to conduct various types of testing of textiles, modern pilot plants [for non-woven and chemical processing], electronic instrumentation laboratory and exclusive library for textiles. Besides, BTRA can arrange for visits to modern mills to acquaint the trainees. Thus, trainees will have first hand arranged for visits to modern mills to acquaint the trainees. Thus, trainees will have first hand arranged for visits to modern mills to acquaint the trainees. Thus, trainees will have first hand knowledge about textile manufacturing and testing activities.
Publications: BTRA publishes research reports, technical reports, survey reports, various norms, book of papers of various Conferences / Seminars / Workshops conducted by BTRA.
BTRA also publishes:
- BTRA Scan [Quarterly In-house Journal]
- BTRA Bulletin
