Communication is process of exchange of facts, ideas, and opinions and as a means that individuals or organizations share meaning and understanding with one another. However there can be no mutual understanding without LISTENING, which is the core of communication. Effective and true communication is greatly dependent on the receptive or the listening side.

Listening is a process of receiving interpreting and reacting to the message received from the communication sender. The power to listen is a remarkably sensitive skill, It is a skill that makes interpersonal communication truly effective and rewarding to all the concerned. Listening is not a trait but a skill. It is a fine art, which can be mastered by cultivation consciously, carefully and systematically.

Why people are poor listeners?

Studies on communication indicate that 75 % or more of communications are verbal both of speaking and listening, and only 25 5 are written that is both reading and writing. On the other hand only 15 % of the information retained in our memories is received through our ears. The other 85 % is received through the eyes from the written words, or from the things we see.

Studies also reveal that 45% of all the communication is spent on listening while time spent on other communication activities is, speech-30%, reading 16% and writing 30%.
