3.3.3.2 Glycogen

Glycogen is a homopolysaccharide containing only glucose units. Glycogen is the storage polysaccharides of the animals. It is often called animal starch. It is a highly branched structure similar to amylopectin and has chains of 12-14 α-D-glucopyranose residues (in α[1-4]- glucosidic linkage) with branching by means of α(1-6 ) - glucosidic bonds . Skeletal muscle and the liver are the two important sites of glycogen storage.
