Procedure

Procedure

  • Weigh accurately 1g of fat/oil into a beaker and dissolve in 3ml of fat solvent.
  • Transfer quantitatively the content of the beaker to a 250ml of conical flask by rinsing the beaker 3 times with few more ml of the fat solvent.
  • Add 15ml of 0.5 N alcoholic KOH.
  • Attach an air condenser.
  • Set up another flask with only reagent and solvent as blank.
  • Then heat both the flasks in a boiling water bath for 30 minutes.
  • Cool to room temperature, rinse the inside of the condenser with a little distilled water and then titrate the contents with 0.5 N HCl using few drops of phenolphthalein as indicator.
  • The endpoint is the disappearance of a pink colour.
  • Find out the difference between the titre value of sample and blank.
  • Calculate the saponification number of the given fat.
