Procedure
-
Weigh accurately 1g of fat/oil into a beaker and dissolve in 3ml of fat solvent.
-
Transfer quantitatively the content of the beaker to a 250ml of conical flask by rinsing the beaker 3 times with few more ml of the fat solvent.
-
Add 15ml of 0.5 N alcoholic KOH.
-
Attach an air condenser.
-
Set up another flask with only reagent and solvent as blank.
-
Then heat both the flasks in a boiling water bath for 30 minutes.
-
Cool to room temperature, rinse the inside of the condenser with a little distilled water and then titrate the contents with 0.5 N HCl using few drops of phenolphthalein as indicator.
-
The endpoint is the disappearance of a pink colour.
-
Find out the difference between the titre value of sample and blank.
-
Calculate the saponification number of the given fat.
