Induced breeding of silver carp and grass carp
Induced breeding of silver carp and grass carp :
● Silver carp and grass carp are exotic carps, introduced into India in the year 1959.
● Both could be successfully induced bred in India through the application of hormones
● The method of breeding of these fishes is similar to that of Indian major carps.
● The only difference is that the dosage of hormone is double compared to Indian major carps and gametes need to be stripped by applying pressure on the abdomen and eggs are artificially fertilized by mixing with sperms.
● Stock the pond with yearlings (0.4-0.5 kg) at 1,000 kg/ha
● Feed them with a special feed prepared from rice bran, oil cake, fish meal, cereals and soybean
● Avoid feeding with plants or grass and this can result in natural breeding after injection
● Select mature brooders based on morphological characters and release in circular tank for breeding
● Follow the technique adapted for Indian major carps
