Description: Most common and familiar species of the genus Salmasis. Test moderately thick and circular, densely covered with short spines. The colour of the test when dried is yellowish brown (In S. virgulata the test is pale greenish). Spines characteristically red or purple at the base and with 4-5 white or yellow bands distally.

These urchins prefer muddy sub-littoral zones, but are some-times washed ashore. Their spines are short and do not break off easily and hence can be handled if one is careful.

Breeds throughout the year.
