12.3. Cryopreservation
Cryopreservation is the ex-situ storage of fish spermatozoa, eggs and embryos without loss of viability in Ultra low temperature such as -196OC in liquid nitrogen.
Gene banking
• It is a bio conservation programme to preserve, conserve and develop species
• Sperms of 200 species of fish have been preserved in the world.
• NBFGR, Lucknow carry out cryopreservation and long term gene banking
• Sperm cryopreservation for 14 species of fish is available in India- Catla Catla, Labeo rohita, Cirrahnus mrigal, Salmo trutta, cyprinus carpio, Tor khudree Tor putitore, Ompack bimaculatus etc.,
• Technique is not successful in crustaceans.
