1.2. Status of farming of selected species

Unit 1 - Shore based aquaculture and mariculture

1.2. Status of farming of selected species

Because of the rapidly changing nature of coastal aquaculture and mariculture development in the Asia-Pacific region, it is difficult to undertake a detailed review of mariculture production at the specific level. Numerous species and commodity-group reviews have been undertaken in the past few years, and others are in preparation or nearing completion. In particular, the CABI Aquaculture Compendium1 and the FAO species profiles ( www.cabi.org/compendia/ac/ and http://www.fao.org/fishery/culturedspecies/search/en)will provide useful summary data on the status of a range of farmed species. Rather than dealing at the specific level, this chapter seeks to assess some overall issues and constraints to the development of sustainable mariculture in the Asia-Pacific region.

The following weblinks will take you to the FAO species fact sheets of important cultured species in coastal and marine environment.
