It has been shown that transgenic zebrafish can be used as pollution indicators. Using estrogen-inducible and stress–responsive promoters linked to fluorescent reporter genes, Gong Zhiyuan and his team from National University of Singapore have generated transgenic zebrafish that display color when exposed to estrogens and other stressful conditions ( www.nus.edu ).
