Procedure

The requirement of life saving appliances for fishing vessels depends  on  the size of the vessel and distance to which the vessel is planning to go from the coast for fishing. Though all these life saving appliances are not required for small and medium class fishing vessels , it is better to learn the usage procedure of all the appliances. The following life saving appliances is used to save the life in open sea.

  1. Life buoys with self ignition light
  2. Life jackets light and whistle
  3. Buoyant apparatus
  4. Immersion suits
  5. Line throwing apparatus
  6. Emergency position indicating radio beacon (EPIRB)
  7. Rocket Parachutes / distress flares
  8. Breeche’s buoy.
  9. Orange smoke container

Life buoy:

Study the features of life buoy, shape, colour, lines attached, weight etc,.

Learn the method of usage of lifebuoy under different conditions at sea with the supervision of the  course teacher .

Life jackets:

a)It is comfortable to wear, allows the wearer to jump into the water from at least 4.5 mtr height without injury, allows him to swim a short distance  and board a survival craft.

It is impossible to wear a lifejacket while in water. So always put it on before you get into water. It also acts like a warm clothing in preventing loss of body heat. Inflatable lifejackets are allowed, but they must have two compartments and inflate automatically on immersion. In addition they should be capable of being inflated by a single manual motion and also by mouth. Every lifejacket is fitted with a plastic whistle which can be used for attracting attention. Every lifejacket must also be fitted with a fixed or flashing light which burns for at least 8 hours. Flashing rate is at least 50 flashes per min.

      How to jump into water with lifejacket on : As far as possible, avoid jumping into water. Try to board survival craft without getting into water, by ladders, ropes etc. Lifeboats are boarded from embarkation deck. However, if due to any reason it becomes necessary to jump, you may do so from a height of not more than 6 metres. But to avoid injury, the tapes of the lifejackets must be tight.

   Before jumping, make sure that there are no obstructions in your way and that yor are not jumping into a boat or on the canopy of a liferaft. Then look parallel to the horizon, hold down your lifejacket by one hand and block off your nose and mouth by the other, keep your feet together, and jump-feet first.

Lift rafts:

  1. Consist of 2 layers of fabric separated by an air gap provide insulation against heat and cold
  2. Capacity is 6 persons
  3. Generally it will be provided with an emergency pack with which contains food sation, freshwater, a radar reflector, one signalling torch, first aid kit etc.

  1. Inflatable life rafts
  2. Rigid life rafts
