Procedure

Carefully observe and note the following aspects with respect to navigation and seamanship at sea.

1. Type and category of the vessel.

2. Manning position in the boat. Note down the responsibility of each person in the vessel.

3. Materials available in the boat with respect to chart reading, safety , fire fighting, anchoring, etc

4. Take nautical chart of that area and observe the general aspects relating the chart marking and real things in the coast.

5. Study the condition of the sea and observe how the wheelsman drives the vessel.

6. Look for the course to be steered and actual heading of vessel. Also find out the reasons for such deviation in the steering course.

7. Look for aids to navigation such as buoys , light house, beacons, etc. and study their features and uses.

8. Look for navigational aids such as magnetic compass and sextant in the vessel .

9. With the help of GPS onboard a vessel, find out the vessel’s position at particular time.

10. See the echosounder available in the vessel and study how it works.

11. Study the anchors available in the vessel for its type , weight method of operation etc.

12. Note down the speed variation of vessel under different conditions at sea and also observe for type of log available in the vessel.

13. Carefully observe the wind and current patterns at sea and how your vessel is coop up the situation.

14. With help of available instruments and chart ,fix your vessel’s position at sea and compare your reading with GPS values.

15. Observe the movement and behaviour of the vessels going nearby your vessel.

16. Study various signals available in the vessel. Also study the navigational lights available in the vessel.

17. Observe the communication system of your vessel.
