Procedure

  Procedure

Procedure to be adopted:

  1. Examine the animals for the clinical symptoms.

  2. Fix the conditions based on their behavior.

For early detection of disease in shrimps and prawns, the following signs of disease can serve as guide:

A. General signs:

  1. Loss of appetite

  2. Abnormal changes in colour

  3. Exoskeleton rot/lesion/erosion

  4. Physical deformity

  5. Abnormal swimming (swimming on surface or pond periphery)

  6. Abnormal condition / colour of gill

  7. Lethargy

  8. Slow growth

  9. Increased exoskeleton epibionts growth

  10. Abnormally prolonged soft-shelling

  11. Mortalities

B. Clinical signs:

  1. Lack of food in the intestine

  2. Opaque musculature

  3. Tail not extended

  4. Pale to white eyes

  5. Cloudy eyes and eyestalks

  6. Colour of faeces in the feeding tray

  7. Distended eyes

In case of disease outbreaks without any characteristics manifestation, the conclusion can be arrived at based on the mortality pattern, i.e.,

(i) Gradual increase in mortalities over several days to weeks are usually caused by microorganisms (Virus, bacteria. Fungi. Parasites) or nutritional deficiencies.

(ii) Sudden mass moralities are generally associated with adverse physicochemical parameters such as low dissolved oxygen, acidic soil, high ammonia/nitrite levels, thermal/salinity stock and toxic substances.
