RECENT ADULTERANT: MELAMINE

  • Melamine is a metabolite of cyromazine, a pesticide.
  • Melamine is mainly used in the chemical industry.
  • Usually used to make fertilizer and plastics, melamine has no nutritional value but is rich in nitrogen (66%).
  • It raises the nitrogen level of feed to appear to be higher in protein, and can lead to higher prices for feed.
  • Routine chemical analysis cannot deduct melamine, but special techniques are available.
