Pachytene stage

PACHYTENE STAGE

Pachytene

  • The pachytene stage, also known as pachynema.
  • Synapsis is now complete.
  • Recombination nodules (chiasmata) appear.
  • Homologous chromosomes randomly exchange segments of genetic information over regions of homology.
  • Crossing over is a precise breakage, swapping reunion between two non-sister chromatids.
  • Crossovers make new gene combinations and are an important source of genetic variations in populations.
