Introduction

POINT / GENE MUTATON

  • A gene or point mutation is defined as any permanent change in a DNA sequence that makes up a gene.
  • Gene mutations occur in two ways,
    • Inherited from a parent or
    • Acquired during its lifetime.
  • Mutation can result in several different types of change in DNA sequences; these can either have
    • no effect,
    • alter the product of a gene,
    • prevent the gene from functioning, or
    • cause lethal.
