GENERAL MORPHOLOGY - HORSE FLY

Tabanus

  • Large size, with conspicuous eyes and short proboscis.
  • Shiny grey colour.
  • Absence of ocelli.
  • Characteristic 3 jointed antennae the proximal segment short, second very short and the distal as long as the 1st and 2nd put together.
  • Third segment having dorsal spur or hook at its base and with 4 annulations distally.
  • Longitudinal stripes on the dorsal surface of the thorax.
  • Stripes or spots on the abdomen.
