GENERAL MORPHOLOGY - HORSE FLY

Large size, with conspicuous eyes and short proboscis. Shiny grey colour. Absence of ocelli. Characteristic 3 jointed antennae the proximal segment short, second very short and the distal as long as the 1st and 2nd put together. Third segment having dorsal spur or hook at its base and with 4 annulations distally. Longitudinal stripes on the dorsal surface of the thorax. Stripes or spots on the abdomen.
