GENERAL MORPHOLOGY - HOUSE FLY

  • The medium sized, dull black, moderately hairy flies
  • Retractile proboscis, adapted for sucking
  • Two large eyes
  • Bilaterally plumose arista
  • Four longitudinal dark stripes on the thorax
  • The single longitudinal abdominal stripe diffusing on the fourth segment
  • Characteristic venation of the wings
  • Mechanical carrier of many human and animal diseases like Cholera, Typhoid, T.B. dysentery, anthrax, surra etc
  • Also act as intermediate host for Habronema muscae and H.megastoma
  • Some species are vectors for Thelazia rhodesii. Duration of life cycle-average 6 days
