Processes of mechanical division (or) size reduction

PROCESSES OF MECHANICAL DIVISION

  • Slicing: Cutting down of larger particles into smaller pieces by use of cutters.
  • Rasping or Filing: Cutting down using a rasp.
  • Disintegration: In this process solids are made into smaller pieces by grinding on a high speed percussion
  • Comminution: Reduction of drugs to smaller pieces by mechanical means
  • Contusion or bruising: Reduction of into smaller pieces by application of successive blows.
  • Grinding: Performed with pestle and mortar. Reduction of size by continuous circular motion
  • Trituration: Rubbing the drug particles against the wall using a pestle and mortar
  • Levigation: Similar to trituration but performed after mixing ina solvent as a paste.
