Northern blotting

NORTHERN BLOTTING

  • Northern blotting is an RNA blotting technique which was developed in 1977 by Alwine et al.
  • In Northern blotting, RNAs are separated by gel electrophoresis, the RNA bands are transferred onto a suitable membrane, e.g., diazobenzyloxymethyl (DBM) paper or nylon membranes, and immobilized; the bands are hybridized with radioactive single stranded DNA probes, and the bands showing hybridization are detected by autoradiography.
  • Northern blotting is simply an extension of the Southern blotting technique.
