  • Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae is catalase negative and oxidase negative, non-spore forming, non acid – fast, non motile, facultatively anaerobic, fermentative Gram positive slim rods.
  • It causes swine erysipelas in pigs and erysipeloid in human.
  • Swine erysipelas manifests itself in three forms known as acute, urticarial (diamond skin) and chronic forms (cardiac and arthritic forms).
