Identification of culturable marine fishes

SHRIMP

Shrimp are the marine shellfish that are widely cultured and exported from India. Shrimps areĀ groupedĀ under penaeids and freshwater prawns are grouped under non-penaeids. The pleurae on either side of the second abdominal segment overlap the pleurae of the first and third segments in non-penaeids. while in penaeids, they overlap only the third segment .

Non-penaid, penaid

  • Penaeus monodon also called as tiger shrimp or giant tiger is the most widely cultured species of shrimp. The major characteristics used in the identification of shrimp are mainly the carapace and its spines, the rostrum and its ventral and dorsal teeth, the ridges or carinae, the grooves or sulci, telson, appendages and their segments, petasma and appendix musculina in the male, the thelycum in female.

Crabs

  • Crabs are decapod (with 5 pairs of appendages), crustaceans with broad carapaces which are fused with their epistomes. Crabs have symmetrical abdomens which are tightly held against the cephalothorax (Not able to "flap" quickly). The carapace is hexagonal, transversely rectangular to transversely ovate. 4-8 teeth and/or lobes on each anterolateral margin. First legs has heavy chelipeds, third pair never chelate.

Bivalves (Mollusca)

  • Oysters
    • Edible oysters of the world comprise about 100 species and are found distributed in all temperate and tropical coasts. Common edible oysters of India include Crassostrea madrasensis, C. cucullata, C. gryphoides and C. discoidea. Backwater oyster, C. madrasensis owing to its fast growth and desirable characteristics is known to be a candidate species for aquaculture. Pearl oysters include Pinctada fucata, P. maxima and P. margratifera .

Oysters

  • Mussels
    • Mussels belonging to Perna viridis and P. indica occupy an important place in aquaculture. Mussels are sedantry bivalves and are found attached to hard substrates with the help of thread like structures (Byssal threads)

Mussel

  • Clams
    • Culturable clam species include Meretrix meretrix, Katelysia opima, Anadara granosa and Vellorita cyprinoids
