Introduction

QUALITATIVE AND QUANTITATIVE ANALYSIS OF PHYTO AND ZOOPLANKTON

AIM :To identify and estimate the phytoplankton and zooplankton of aquatic systems.

  • The drifting microscopic plants namely ‘phytoplankton’ form the basis for the production of finfish and shellfish in aquaculture systems. Besides serving directly as food organism for the growing fishes in these systems, they are help in the oxygenation of water column. With regard to the adverse effects, phytoplankton at times form blooms which are mainly due to the unused feed and excreta accumulated in the culture system and associated eutrophication. As the development of algal blooms in culture systems may lead to deterioration of water quality, it is necessary to eradicate such unwanted blooms and restore the quality of water column.
