MOLECULAR DIAGNOSTICS

• Molecular diagnostic technologies that are either already in use or being include polymerase chain reaction (PCR), monoclonal antibodies and recombinant antigens.
• Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays have become the standard means of diagnosing and monitoring many animal and fish diseases worldwide, and the PCR technique is especially useful in diagnosing livestock disease.
• Molecular characterisation of the virus serotypes causing foot and mouth disease has helped in the vaccination and control programmes in Asia.
