INTRAMUSCULAR INJECTIONS

Sites

  • Lumbosacral
    •  Difficult in very thin animals
  • Semimambranosus or Semitendinosus
    • Avoid sciatic nerve
  • Triceps
    • Not commonly used
  • Do not use the cervical musculature in small animals

Steps

  1. Draw medication into a syringe
  2. Change needle prior to injection
  3. Isolate muscle
  4. Insert needle perpendicular to skin and into the muscle mass
  5. Aspirate – if blood is seen remove syringe and needle, change needle and try again
  6. Inject medication and remove needle
