INTERPRETATION

  • Erythrocyte indices are used in morphological differentiation of anaemia
  • In the case of MCV the normal mean for the species should be considered
  • Increased MCV and normal MCHC is seen in macrocytic normochromic anaemia and decreased MCV and MCHC in microcytic hypochromic anaemia
  • MCHC is a more valuable measurement than MCH
  • Increased MCHC is not seen in any condition since the erythrocyte cannot be supersaturated with haemoglobin
