  • Marrow hypoplasia as with bracken fern poisoning, radiation, ehrlichiosis, chloramphenicol toxicity, excess estrogens, phenyl butazone
  • Acute haemorrhage after fluid volume has been restored and before regeneration occurs
  • Feline leukemia virus

Normocytic hypochromic

  • Early (days to week) iron deficiency

Macrocytic normochromic (no reticulocytosis)

  • Vit B12 and folate deficiencies
  • Cobalt deficiency in ruminants
  • Poodle macrocytosis (healthy miniature poodles, no anaemia)
  • Feline leukemia virus- related dyscariasis (no reticulocytosis)
  • Regenerative anaemias

Macrocytic hypochromic

  • Markedly responsive anaemias (with reticulocytosis )
  • Vit B12 and folate deficiencies

Microcytic normochromic

  • Characteristic of the Japanese Akita breed of dogs
  • Iron deficiency in progression

Microcytic hypochromic

  • Iron and copper deficiencies
  • Chronic blood loss
  • Pyridoxine deficiency
