  • Ipomoea carnea is the most commonly encountered toxic species.
  • The toxic principles include lysergic acid and indole alkaloids.
  • Seeds are the major sources of toxin.
  • Acute and subacute toxicity are reported in goats.
  • Salivation, diarrhoea, mydriasis, shivering, inco-ordination, staggering gait, prostration, ataxia, paralysis of limbs, lateral recumbency, hypotension and death are the major clinical symptoms.
  • Activated charcoal may be useful after a gastric lavage.
  • Tranquillizers and sedatives are useful to keep the animal quiet.
