  • Solanine and solanidin are the toxic principles.
  • The important members of this family that are toxic include Solanum tuberosum (potato) and Solanum nigrum (Black nightshade).
  • Green part of the potato and germinating potato contains solanine.
  • Unripe, old, rotten and sprouting potatoes are more toxic.
  • Eyes, skin and young green sprout of potato contain more alkaloid.
  • It is irritant to the mucous membrane, causes haemolysis of RBC, CNS stimulation and then depression.
  • Treatment is symptomatic and use of saline purgatives and stimulants are useful.
