Definition

  • An ovariohysterectomy is the removal of both the ovaries and the uterus.

Indications

  • Elective sterilization of the female dog or cat.
  • Infections of uterus (e.g. pyometra, localized or diffuse cystic endometrial hyperplasia), ovaries, or oviducts.
  • Ovarian-hormone induced hormone imbalances.
  • Also in mammary tumors to reduce the endogenous production of estrogen.
  • Extensive traumatic injuries (uterine rupture).
